INTRODUCTION

   Aviation pioneer Handley Page didn’t like it, but he had to fly into a remote area and land. His landing went fine, so did the takeoff... but then it happened.

He heard gnawing. It must be a rat, probably a huge jungle rat!

Page’s stomach sank as he thought about how much damage a gnawing rat could do to delicate aviation systems. And in these remote areas, repair facilities and mechanics didn’t exist. Something had to be done, but he had no co-pilot to spell him while he chased a rat throughout the plane.

Just then he remembered that rats can’t live at high altitude. So he pulled back on the stick and began to climb. Higher the plane soared, until Page found it hard to breathe.

Gasping for breath, he listened. The gnawing stopped. He didn’t hear it again, so he hoped for the best and waited to land.

At his next stop, sure enough, Handley Page found a dead rat behind his cockpit.

Like Page, believers today seem distracted - infested by the rats of secularism, busyness, materialism, worry, religious controversies - well, you can probably list them better than I can.

It’s clear that God’s people today need a break from the rat race.

So why not soar higher? This soaring, higher flight into a single-hearted pursuit of God can’t help but choke out the rats.

That’s what this book is about. Not just learning to pray, but learning to soar. And learning to come awake to the startling fact that God waits for us to pray. Even heaven itself waits for God’s people to decide to soar higher.
